What's in my Bag?

You might think 'what's so interesting about the contents of someone's bag?'
Or maybe you're here because your curious what I carry always carry with me everywhere I go?

I've just realised that everything I carry with me are in some way favorites of mine. And what you always carry with you, tells a lot about who you are.
That's exactly the reason why I like to take a peak into someone elses bag.

So today I'm giving you a peak inside mine with all the products I love.

What's inside:
- My wallet. It's made from dark brown leather and it still looks great. I think I've had this one for more than 5 years now. The only downside is that coins tend to slip out when I open the zipper...
- I hardly ever leave the house without handcream. I'm a true addict, I admit it. My favorite is the one from Nivea with macadamia in it. So soft!
- Another must is my lipbalm, especially in the winter. I always use Labello Hydro Care, because it's always soft and easy to apply.
- A girl with long hair always carries an elastic hairband with her.
- And without glass wipes I wouldn't see a thing after a while.
- My mobile phone, where would I be without it. Not that I'm glued to my phone, but without it I feel a bit lost.
- Ah, yes. Notebooks. You've read it a few weeks ago: I collect them and always have a few in use. I always have a small notebook with me to scribble down to do-lists or ideas.
- And what's the use of a notebook without a pen? So I always carry a pen with me, preferably my favorite pens from HEMA.

And for those who wonder where I got that nice bag? I bought it at the Camden Lock Markets in London, but you can find these kind of bags in many places these days.

What's in your bag? What do you always take with you when you go outside?

What's inside:
- Mijn portemonnee.
Heerlijk zacht!
- Een andere must have is mijn lippenbalsem, vooral in de winter.

What Do You Collect?

Recently I read about collections from people and why they collect it. I think humans are collectors by nature, they sometimes do it without knowing it.
This got me thinking of all the things I collect. I think I collect even more things than I'm aware of.

The one that first came to mind is notebooks and to-do lists. I love to write lists, things I need to remember or ideas that burst into my mind down in a nicely illustrated book. Or one with a lovely pattern. I only use about 3-5 books at a time, so there's a lot of books ready to be used. But when I see a beautiful one, I can't help myself, I just have to buy it.

And I write these things down with my favorite pens from HEMA. The ones with a little soft grip. They write smoothly and I can write for a long time without hurting my fingers.
My ferret is also a big fan of them, she likes to take them behind my desk and chew on them...
Ok, back to collections. You may wonder why I call these pens a collection. That's because when they are empty, I trash the filling and keep the casing of the pens. I still want to do something with them, something artsy and creative, but I haven't come up with the right idea yet.

Another cllection is tea. Since a few years I started drinking tea and especially the ones with a special flavor. Everything with cinnamon in it is a success with me. In London I've bought some funky flavors at Yumchaa. Flavors like Raspberry Vanilla, mango Sunrise, Chilli Chilli Bang Bang and Red Chai. There's more tea than shown in the picture, but I thought simple teabags wouldn't be that interesting to show. What you see are the crownjewels of my collection.

A real collection I have, one that I keep for the sake of just having it, is the issues of Flow Magazine. I have all editions since the magazine started. But the extention of the collection will stop soon, because I will stop my subscription. I still have 10 editions to read, which shows I don't really have enough time to keep up with all the issues.

You're probably wondering wether there is a creative collection somewhere. Well, I wouldn't be a creative mind if I didn't have one. I have a box where I collect all sorts of papers. Ones with beautifull colors, illustrations and patterns. To hang at my wall or use it for scrapping.
I also, ofcourse, have a big collection of yarns. Much much bigger than the ones you see in the picture. For this year I've made myself promise I wouldn't buy too much new yarn and first work with the yarns I have lying around. Time to clean up a bit!

What are your collections?

Memories of 2014 + Plans for 2015

Source: Manuel Ramírez

Way, way after all the other bloggers have reviewed 2014, it's now my time to hit publish on this blog post. It took me a little longer, but I also looked back to the past year and looked to the plans I have for 2015.

Memories of 2014
- One of the best memories from last year: London. 10 full days in the city I love and I stayed at my friend Rasa. It was my second visit to London and this time I enjoyed it even more. I took more time to look around me and see what happens, instead of going from the one thing I wanted to do to the next.
- The second best memory of last year was having almost 2 months of holidays in the summer. Being a student comes with some advantages and I experienced that summer holidays is a big one. I've spent a lot of time reading, crafting and having fun.
- And something that will come back every year: I really enjoyed the time I spent with my ferret Mexy. I melt every time I see her cute look on her face, even though that probably means she's done somethin bad...
- Last year I met Charlotte from DraadDesign. We've become some kind of Etsy-friends and I really appreciate it.
- Something else about Etsy last year: Almost every month I got orders, which is new for me. Compared to the year before this was a big improvement.
- Lessons learned: don't sell your handmade items in a pop-up shop. It doesn't seem to work for the items I make somehow. Also: I need to work on presentation and photography of my products.
- Another pretty major accomplisment was graduating for the first year of my study. It's not a very big thing, but I would have never guessed I would finish the first year with the absolutely bizar marks I got...
- I'm also very grateful for the opportunity I have at school to do some extra projects and earn certificates with them (some kind of Honours projects). One of those gave me a lot of stress, but in the end it was worth it.
- Something less fun was injuring my ankle in September and the trouble I had with my lungs since October. It's not as bad as it was though. Tomorrow I'll get the results of a lung function test I did 2 weeks ago, let's hope there's something I can do or a change of medication that will make it a little better.
- Last year was also my first year that I was a member of a student society. I've really enjoyed meeting new people, finding friends and spending weekends & fun times with them.
- And to finish this list: I enjoyed all the knitting and crocheting I did last year. I should make a list of all the things I've made...

And then there's 365 of brand new days in front of me. 2015 is already filled with many plans and thing I want to do.
But one is a really big plan that is potentially life changing. No, I'm not getting married and I'm not pregnant. But: I'll probably go studying abroad for 5 months, starting this September. And chances are pretty big that I'll be spending this time in my home away from home: London baby! Nothing is sure yet, but my mind wanders in that direction many times. A girl can dream right?
Also I'm really looking forward to the vacations I'll go on with my sister and brother-in-law and one with the student society. Guaranteed I'll have fun times.

Besides this there's the usual New Year's resolutions: eating more healthy, being less lazy sometimes and all. No surprises here. But I have some other more concrete plans and wishes for 2015. And sharing them with others makes the chances of really doing it bigger, right?
Here goes nothing...

On the wishlist
Blogging & Etsy
- I'd like to share more craft ideas and DIY's on the blog. I'm also thinking to make a questionaire to ask all of you what you think about the blog & Etsy shop, what you'd like to read more about on the blog and if you have any specific ideas.
- And this year I want to move the blog to it's own domain. I really have no clue about how to do this and where I want it to go, but I'll have more than enough time to figure that out.
- I want to bring my handmade items to at least one craft market this year. No more pop-up shops where other people sell my stuff, but I want to sell it myself and see the customers. I think that's much more fun!
- Besides more knitted and crocheted items, you can also expect a downloadable PDF with instructions to make your own knitted banner and DIY kits for this.
- Bring more continuity into blogging and running a handmade business and make sure there's also time for the little details. To do this Charlotte from DraadDesign and I have agreed to meet at least once a month in a café/bar where we will work on our blogs and shops and help eachother. And to make it even better: we started with this resolution even before 2015 started!
- And there's some milestones to celebrate: the 5th birthday of my blog, the 3rd birthday of the JCLN Etsy shop and the 500th blog post is about to see the light!

Foods
- Find the perfect breakfast: I always have to start my day with something sweet. Without it my engine doesn't seem to start. Now I start my day with bread and chocolate sprinkles. Not very healthy and sometimes a bit boring to eat it pretty much every day, so I want to start a search for other ways to fire up my engine in the morning. Do you have any good ideas?
- Bake cookies: Just because cookies are nice and fun to make. At least, I think so. I never really made cookies myself.
- Make my own curry: I've made curry from a package of curry paste, but I want to really make curry from scratch. Adding all the herbs & spices myself. I'll definitely share the recipe on the blog!

Crafts
- I need to start knitting/crocheting with the yarns I bought last year and had amazing plans with. But these plans never happened (or I forgot about their existence).

List lover
- I love making to-do lists & all and it really helps me. But somehow I always end up with a long list in my mind and I never write it down. The result: ideas get lost and time is mostly spent not doing what needs to be done... I have many lovely notebooks in the closet, waiting to be used. So this year, they will.

What are your plans for 2015? Anything special?

____________________________________________________________

Daar gaan we...

Op het verlanglijstje
Bloggen & Etsy

Survival Guide for Times of Obligated Rest

Have you ever injured some part of yourself and needed to take a lot of rest for it to heal?
So did I last month, as you may know I severely stretched my ankle and I had to let it rest a lot and cool it.
And all of a sudden you find yourself in the situation of a long stretch of obligated down time.
What should I do with all that time?

Well, here are a few ideas to keep you occupied.

  • Read blogs you like or go on a search for your new favorite blog
  • Get creative: knit, crochet, draw, colour or go craft with paper. Maybe you could make yourself a scarf for this winter?

  • Pick a book, dive into it and find yourself in another world for a couple of hours
  • Watch a scary movie (or a less scary one). Or even better: watch episode after episode of your favorite series.
  • Get going on that pile of 'to read magazines' you have around your home.

What is your best advice for spening obligated time you need to sit/lay down and not move?

Top 11 Blogging Tips from HEMA Blog Academy

Yesterday was so cool!
Why? Because I participated at the HEMA Blog Academy!
If you're not Dutch, it's likely you don't know HEMA. It's a Dutch store chain that sells everything your heart desires. From basic clothing and make-up to yarns, toys and home decoration. And the best of all: it's great quality for a great price.
Since yesterday HEMA started a blog where they share inspirations on how to use their products. And what better way than to let your customers share how they use a product or why they like it.
So HEMA invited 1000 (potential) bloggers, shared tips and inspired many of us. We even got sneak previews from some new product lines! Yay!
Oh, and did I tell about the goodiebag? A nice linnen bag with a really cool notebook and a giftcard!

But OK, enough praise.
During the event we listened to some succesful bloggers telling about how they built up their blogs from scratch and we got to ask them questions. The best was a talk from Yara Michels from Chapter Friday. Very inspiring and helpful!
I have made a Top 11 of the best blogging tips that were shared yesterday.

1. Blog because you like it, not because you want to make money.
2. Be authentic: show your personality, passion and expertise.
3. Keep up to date with what others in your niche are doing. Don't copy it, but be inspire by it.
4. Use your own pictures or make sure you give credit to the owner of pictures you use.
5. Make sure your blog's layout, images and text have a signature style. Be recoginazable.
6. A short text with quality is much, much better than long stretches of text.
7. Read your text out loud. Does it sound like you?
8. Ask yourself if you would read your blogpost if it was published on another site. Does your blogpost deserve attention from people?
9. Social media: Go where your readers go. Promote your blogposts there.
10. Social media: Don't just promote yourself. Also interact with others and share things your readers might benefit from.
11. Best days to blog (according to statistics): Tuesday and Thursday. Best times: 9am, 1pm, 4pm and 10 pm.

At te end of the day, HEMA invited all of us to write blogposts for them, so I'm definitely gonna give it a try. Let's hope soon I'll be able to share a link to my first published HEMA blogpost here!

I hope the tips were helpful for you.
I've summarized all the tips into a printable you can print and hang above your laptop/PC. Click here to download. Only for personal use. If you want to share it, please link back to this blogpost.

Gisteren was zo cool!
Waarom?

My Summer 2014 Reading List

How is the summer treating you till now? Having a good time?

Over here I'm enjoying to the fullest.
The part I like best until now: the hours and hours I can spend reading books.
In my bed, on a bench in the park, in the grass. There's always a good place to open a book, dive into it and be in another world for a moment.
I'll introduce you to my 8 summer reads.

Perfect, Rachel Joyce
This book tells about Byron, a boy who believes he saw the moment the government added 2 seconds in a leap year. At that moment he was in the car with his mom and his little sister. He screamed, his mom breaks strongly and Byron sees how they hit a little girl on a red bike. His mom didn't notice and drives on.
From that point forward Byron and his friend James try to avoid the moment that this crisis will reach his mom. This seems to be harder than they thought.

Me Before You, Jojo Moyes
An intruiging story of how a girl becomes the carer of a young quadriplegic man in a wheelchair. She is there to help him with stuff and keeps him company.
At some point she discovers he want to end his life and she tries to change his mind.
A heartfelt story, written in a way that it seeps into your soul.

De Kraamhulp, Esther Verhoef
This is a Dutch book, I don't believe it appeared in English (yet?).
I've read her work before and when on the cover it said it was her 'scariest thriller ever' I just had to buy it and add it to my stack of books.
The story: A female cop lost her brother half a year ago. He fell down the stairs, a domestic accident. But she doesn't trust his wife. She dives into it and finds out more and more strange things about her sister-in-law that could be catagorized as psychopathic. And to top it off, this sister-in-law is now a maternity carer for a new family.
Can't wait to find out how scary it really is!

Room, Emma Donoghue
Jack lives in a Room with his Ma. He never get's out, the Room is his whole world.
They are being taken care of by Old Nick, but an incident changes this and Ma needs to take action.
She tells Jack that the things he saw on TV are real, that there is a world behind this Room and that that's where he'll have to live. Jack escapes the Room and finds himself in a world he never knew existed.

From Nicci French: Blue Monday, Tuesday's Gone, Waiting for Wednesday and Thursday's Children
I love the books from Nicci French, so ofcourse I had to read their latest ones too. I bought them with some giftcards I got for my birthday.
What I like about Nicci French is that their stories are always so exciting to read, I always find it hard to put their books aside.
These books are part of the Frieda Klein series, of which 4 out of 8 have been published till now.
I can't wait to read them!

I've already finished the first three books (Perfect, Me Before You & De Kraamhulp) and I'm currently reading 'Room'.

What's on your summer reading list? Which books would you recommend me to definetly read after these? Share your suggestions in the comment section!
