DIY: Tea Display

Yes, I hear you thinking. What the heck is a tea display?
Well, let me tell you the story behind it.
In August my grandma turned 80! So there was a celebration planned and my sister, brother-in-law and I always give a gift together. Because it's such a milestone, 80 years, we wanted to give something  special.
My gran always drinks tea and she always drinks one kind of tea. So we wanted to give her 80 teabags of this flavour.
But giving 80 teabags in a box is a little boring, don't you think?
So while brainstorming on how we would give it, I saw this blog post on A Cup of Life (It's in Dutch, but it's a great blog, check it out!).
So if you replace those photo's with teabags, then you've got a tea display. It's fun to give as a gift, but you could also use it to show the flavours of tea you have in your collection.
It's not at all difficult to make, but I'll show you step by step how to make it.

What you need

  • Picture frame
  • cotton thread
  • small nails & a hammer
  • cloth pins
  • super glue
  • and ofcourse teabags

Step by step
1. Find a good place to hammer nails into the frame. I did it on the back of the frame. Mark where you want the nails, make sure it's on both sides on about the same height.
2. Put the cloth pins on a cotton thread.
3. Hammer the nails in the frame, do this carefully to not split or damage the frame (or yourself). Then knot the thread around it and cut off the end short. To make sure the knot doesn't come loose, I've added a drop of superglue to it.
4. If you don't want the cloth pins to move along the thread, you can add a little thread over the pin (see the worksheet below) and knot it on both sides. When it's in the right place, you add a drop of super glue. But make sure you only glue the knot and not the cloth pin (guess what I did...).
5. Hang the teabags. I've added some crocheted flowers, you can find the patterns here, here, here and here (instructions in Dutch).

I hope you enjoyed it!

Recipe: Italian Savory Bread

This savory bread is so, so good!
I made it when I was with my family and after baking & cooling down a bit, I think it was gone within the hour. It's a delicious bite for lunch or as an in between or serve it as a side dish with an itialian dinner.
And, not entirely unimportant, it's not that hard to make at all! You just make a pizzadough, stretch it out, add pesto, dried tomatoes & mozzarella and you roll it.
Let me give you a more detailed description.

Ingredients

  • 350 gr flower
  • 5 gr yeast
  • 7 gr salt (may seem much, but it's ok)
  • 250 ml lukewarm water
  • a bit of olive oil
  • 3-4 tbsp pesto
  • 1 1/2 mozarella balls
  • + 10 sundried tomato pieces

Make a dough by mixing the flower, yeast, salt. Don't let the salt get in direct contact with the yeast.
After this you add the olive oil and half of the water, mix this untill it forms a ball. If the dough is still dry, you add some more water.
Kneed the dough for about 7 minutes.
Put it in a bowl and let it rest in a warm place with a wetted teatowel over the bowl.
After 1 hour you kneed the dough for a little and then spread it out in a square. Make sure you've added flower below it.
First spread out the pesto on top of it and then put pieces of the mozzarella and tomatoes.
Roll the whole dough up, so that it forms a cilinder. Make sure the roll is closed. Especially on the two sides, otherwise the pesto will drip out in the oven.
Put it on the tray you'll use in the oven, cover it with the wet towel and let rest again for 45 minutes.
Bake the bread in the oven for 30 minutes at 180°C (355F).

The bread tastes best when it's still a bit warm, but I guess it's also yum when it's cooled down.
Enjoy!

Eet smakelijk!

Recipe: Raspberry Cheesecake

Another delicious recipe this week!
I've made this one last weekend when some friends came over to celebrate my birthday! (yes, I celebrate my birthday in shifts, because my room is too tiny...).
This isn't a cheesecake like you know them, since it's not made with cream cheese, but with quark. In Dutch it's called 'kwarktaart', but I don't think there's a proper translation for it.
Anyways, it's delicious! Fresh from the quark and sweet from the raspberries. It's perfect for sunny celebrations or summery picknicks.

Ingredients (for 9 inch pie)

  • 375 grams (frozen) raspberries
  • 225 grams Bastogne cookies
  • 750 ml whipped cream
  • 75 grams butter
  • 110 grams sugar
  • 8 + a 1/4 sheets of gelatine
  • 375 grams quark

Recipe for the bottom
1. Chop the cookies in the kitchenmachine.
2. Add the melted butter and mix.
3. Put it in the tin and press it together with the back of a spoon.
4. Let it cool in the fridge.

Recipe for quark mix
1. Let the gelatine soak in a good amount of water.
2. Cook the raspberries in a pan with the sugar, keep stirring. Once it's become saucy, stieve the mixture to get rid of the seeds.
3. Heat the raspberry sauce for 10-20 seconds in the microwave to make it hot again and add the gelatine. Stir until it is dissolved.
4. Add the quark to it and mix. Put this bowl in the fridge to cool down.
5. Whip the cream with sugar (see package for how much you need) until it's as thick as yoghurt.
6. Gently fold the whipped cream into the raspberry-quark mixture. Don't stir, cause it will take the air out of it.
7. Pour the mixture on top of the bottom and spread equally.
8. Leave the pie in the fridge for at least 5 hours. Serve with a raspberry on top and some whipped cream.

When I made it, I discovered at the end that I had a recipe for a tin much bigger than the one I had... Yep, you see it coming. When I filled the tin, I had a lot of mixture and some cookie crumbs left. What to do with it? It was to much to eat it all myself.
Well, I've made Raspberry Cheesecake Upside Down! So if you have some left too, take a ramekin (or a few), pour in the mixture and sprinkle some crumbs on top. And there you go, you have a delicious dessert!

I hope you enjoyed the recipe and you'll have fun making it & eating it!
See you again next week.

  • 375 gram (bevroren) frambozen
  • 225 gram Bastogne koekjes
  • 750 gram slagroom
  • 75 gram (room)boter
  • 110 gram suiker
  • 8 + 1/4 blaadjes gelatine
  • 375 gram kwark

Recept voor de bodem
1. Maal de koekjes fijn in de keukenmachine.
2. Voeg de gesmolten boter toe en meng.
4. Laat de bodem afkoelen in de koelkast.

Recept voor kwarkmix

Recipe: White Chocolate & Raspberry Cupcakes

Hey, I found the way back to my blog! I've been gone for 4 weeks to focus on my study. Tomorrow is my last exam (for now) and just finished preparing it, so I have some time to blog again!

Last Tuesday was my 27th birthday (yes, I know, I'm old :P) and to celebrate I've made some cupcakes.
Besides some basic ones, I've also made cupcakes with white chocolate and raspberries. And as always with cupcakes, the best is on top of it: mashmallow fluff!
Now I won't keep this delicious thing exclusively to myself. Here's the recipe, enjoy baking it and sharing it with your friends!

Ingredients (for 6 cupcakes)

  • 75 grams white chocolate
  • 75 grams butter, in cubes
  • 70 grams flower
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 70 grams sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 150 grams raspberries
  • marshmallow fluff

Step-by-step
1. Preheat the oven at 180°C and prepare the cupcake tin and the paper molds.
2. Melt the white chocolate and butter au-bain-marie. For a little crisp in your cupcake, you can use white chocolate with ricecrisps in it.
3. While it melts, weigh the flower and add baking powder and a pinch of salt. Mix it a little.
4. When the chocolate and butter is melted, take it off the heat and add the sugar and eggs.
5. Mix bit-by-bit the flower through it until it forms a smooth batter.
6. Put 6 raspberries aside and cut the rest in small pieces. Mix these pieces through the batter.
7. Divide the batter in the paper molds and bake the cupcakes for 20-25 minutes.
8. Just before you will serve the cupcakes, add the marshmallow fluff. Make sure the cupcakes are cooled down. Note: don't put the fluff on too early, it will slowly move down your cupcake...
To finish it off, put a raspberry on top and maybe add some sprinkles or something.

I hope you'll enjoy baking & eating it!

  • 75 gram witte chocolade
  • 75 gram boter, in blokjes
  • 70 gram bloem
  • 1/2 theelepel bakpoeder
  • 70 gram suiker
  • 2 eieren
  • 150 gram frambozen
  • marshmallow fluff

Stap-voor-stap

Homemade: savory bread with ham and oregano

Have you ever baked bread yourself?
No, not with a prepared breadmix, but from the start. Adding flower, salt & yeast and knead. knead and knead.
If not, you really should do it some day. It's fun to do and to see the bread develop from sticky dough into something that almost looks professional!
Oh, and if you have done it before. Do it again, cause you know it's fun!
Last week I've made my very first savory bread together with my mom. Here's the recipe.

Ingredients

  • 500 gr flower
  • 10 gr salt
  • 20 gr yeast
  • 2,5 dl milk (roomtemperature)
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 200 gr raw ham (cut in strips or squares)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano

Recipe
1. Dissolve the yeast in the milk and add the sugar.
2. Put the flower in a bowl, put the salt on edge and add the yeast solution in a hole in the middle.
3. Knead this for a bit, then add the egg. Knead for about 10 minutes, until a ball of dough forms. Leave this in the bowl and cover with a moist teatowel. Let the dough rise for 1 hour in a warm spot.

4. Knead the dough again strongly and add the ham and oregano. Knead till it is evenly distributed through the dough.

5. Divide the dough in 7 pieces, make balls and place them in a baking tray that is buttered and dusted with flower. Leave again for 1 hour in a warm spot covered with a moist teatowel.
6. Bake the bread for about 45 minutes at 200°C/6700°F.

7. When you take the bread out of the oven, take it out of the baking tray, immediately brush it with water or melted butter and let it rest on a rack

Enjoy!

Ingredienten

  • 500 gr bloem
  • 10 gr zout
  • 20 gr gist
  • 2,5 dl lauwwarme melk
  • 1 tl suiker
  • 1 ei
  • 200 gr rauwe ham (in reepjes of vierkantjes gesneden)
  • 1 tl gedroogde oregano

Recept

Geniet ervan! Eet smakelijk!

Turning trends into 'made by you' - Spring edition

Do you also like trends, but hate it that everybody else has exactly the same in their house? Me too!

I love to have my house filled with beautiful decorations, but I don't want to simply follow all trends that are being sold to me in stores all around. I like to make those trendy decorations unique, to make it my own.
I've been looking around at garden and home stores and today I'm gonna show you three Spring trends and how to make them your own. They're all very easy to make yourself, I'll tell you exactly how.
General instructions: Look for a trend that you like and strip it down to how it is made. Then look around in your house or go visit your local thrift store, find the things you need and assemble your own, handmade and unique homedecor.

Lace
I've noticed that there's a lot of laced jars and bottles in the stores. And they're so gorgeous and look great with a candle in it.

To make this your own you need:

  • Cleaned vegetable jars
  • Laced placemat (or just some old lace you've got lying around)
  • Scissors
  • Superglue

How to:
Cut the lace to the size that fits the jar. Put some superglue on the jar and stick the lace to it. (Be carefull to not glue your fingers to the jar!).

Estimated price: €2,00 for two laced jars.

Hanging candle lights

I really liked thos jars with some textile and robe around when I saw them at a gardening store. They look adorable, but kind of pale and basic.

I wanted to make some Easter decoration, so I've chosen to use ribbons with rabbits on it and on pastel yellow ribbon.

To make this your own you need:

  • Cleaned vegatable jars
  • Some textiles and ribbons you have lying around
  • Beads
  • Iron thread
  • Scissors
  • Superglue

How to:
Cut the textile you've chosen to the right size. Stick it to the jar with some superglue.
Wrap a ribbon around the jar.
Make the hanger with the iron thread and already place the beads onto it. Then stick some iron thread through one end of the hanger, wrap the thread around the top of the jar. Stick the other end of the iron thread through the other end of the hanger and twist the two ends of threads together.

Estimated price: €5,00 for three hanging candle lights.

Bottles & ribbons

Another thing I've seen were small bottles with some ribbons hanging around. Very simple and a nice pop of color for your livingroom.

To make this your own you need:

  • Small bottles (vases in your house or from thrift store, cleaned beer bottles)
  • Ribbons
  • Beads
  • Rub-on transfers with lace pattern
  • Scissors

How to:
Choose the ribbons you want to use and wrap them around the neck of the bottle.
Put the ends of the ribbons through the hole of the bead and tie the ribbons to the neck.
To add some extra detail to the bottle I've rubbed on some rub-on transfer lace.

Estimated price: €2,50 for two bottles with ribbons & lace pattern.

As you see, it's very easy to make some small homedecor yourself. It's cheaper and much more fun to do then when you buy something in the store!
Can't wait to see what you're gonna make yourselves, please share it in the comments or on Twitter with me (@jacolien87).

If you liked this blog post, please share it with your friends. And sign up for the free JCLN Newsletter on top of the page, to make sure you won't miss a thing!

My knitted pillowcase

Just a short message.
Today I've finished my knitted pillowcase.
It's quite simple, but I like how it turned out.
What do you think?

Even een kort berichtje.
